Safe Kids Coalitions of Orange & Chatham Counties
Background
Safe Kids Chatham and Safe Kids Orange, both led by UNC Trauma, have been leaders in child injury prevention and community risk reduction in our area for many years. We are a diverse group of stakeholders coming together for the same goal: to protect kids. We are proud to be one of 43 local coalitions of Safe Kids North Carolina and a member of Safe Kids Worldwide. Our coalitions' work is data driven, and we address the most common injuries experienced by our communities' kids. Our main focus areas are:
Community Coalition Projects
Our coalitions' members meet on a monthly basis to coordinate injury prevention efforts between our communities’ public service and public safety agencies. We work on initiatives focused on child passenger safety, gun safety, water safety (pool and open water), bicycle and wheeled sports safety, fire and burn safety, medicine and overdose prevention, and home safety, including falls prevention. We are also increasingly focused on promoting youth mental health and suicide prevention. Safe Kids Chatham and Orange serve as experts and connections to local resources for parent and caregivers on these topics above. Specifically, we provide outreach, education, and programs to community and family-serving organizations. Some of our annual projects include supporting Operation Medicine Drops, National Safe Kids and Child Passenger Safety Weeks, and Fire Safety Month.
Child Passenger Safety Car Seat Checks and Community Car Seat Program
Safe Kids Orange and Chatham supports Child Passenger Safety Technicians and Permanent Checking Stations (PCS) to provide free car seat safety assistance checks on a regular basis. Many of our partnering fire departments are designated sites PCS, and you can find their hours of operation here. You do not need to be a resident of these counties to have your seat checked. Several of these sites may also have car and booster seats available at no cost for families in need. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment. Spanish interpretation is available upon request at several of these sites. Safe Kids Orange and Chatham also offer a community car seat referral program. Residents of either county that are working with a public assistance agency can request a referral through that agency for a free car seat (newborn through booster seat age) (dependent upon availability of car seats and technicians). We do not offer infant carriers through this program.
