Safe Kids Coalitions of Orange & Chatham Counties
Safe Kids Chatham and Safe Kids Orange, both led by UNC Trauma, have been leaders in child injury prevention and community risk reduction in our area for many years. We are a diverse group of stakeholders coming together for the same goal: to protect kids. We are proud to be one of 43 local coalitions of Safe Kids North Carolina and a member of Safe Kids Worldwide
Our coalitions' work is data driven, and we address the most common injuries experienced by our communities' kids. Our three main focus areas are:
We support bike, skateboarding and street safety by providing helmets to community members, holding bike rodeos, and educating kids about safe habits. We also provide swimming and water safety education for both pools and open water, and we provide life jackets at Jordan Lake. For resources for biking and street safety click here.
For water safety resources click here.
Community Coalition Projects
Our coalitions' members meet on a monthly basis to coordinate injury prevention efforts between our communities’ public service and public safety agencies. Some of our annual projects include planning Safe Kids Day and other safety fairs, providing bicycle helmets to toy drives during the holidays, providing car seats to families in need, and holding car seat safety checks.
Child Passenger Safety Diversion Program
We lead the Orange & Chatham Counties Child Passenger Safety Diversion Program. If you or someone you know has been given a CPS citation by law enforcement in Orange or Chatham Counties in NC, you may be able to have your citation dismissed by attending our program. For more information you can call 984-974-2437. More information on North Carolina's Child Passenger Safety laws can be found here.
Safe Kids partners with Child Passenger Safety Permanent Checking Stations (PCS) to provide car seat safety checks on a regular basis. Many of our partnering fire departments are designated PCS, and you can find their hours of operation here.
If you would like to request a remote CPS consultation you can contact our office at 984-974-2437.
